And Ella also went up from Texas, from the city of Corpus Christi, to Pennsylvania, to the city of the Moravians, which is called Bethlehem…. Moravian Christmas cookies…the star of Bethlehem…the Poconos…William Penn and religious liberty…Bethlehem Steel…

I have spent very little time in Pennsylvania, none in this part of the state, never driving before. Pennsylvania Interstates and turnpikes are nothing like Texas expressways. In dense, late-afternoon traffic and road construction, I exited too soon (I confess that I have never grasped GPS) and wandered through small towns, woods and farmland until I finally came upon the state highway that led to Bethlehem. The terrain changed and I climbed a steep hill, then down to a river valley, then up a steeper hill and down to a much deeper, wider valley. There was Lehigh University on the right and–across the river–historic Bethlehem. A few tall buildings, a few old factory smokestacks in a town where mills once crowded the riverfront. A charming, inviting Main Street. A well renovated old hotel. It may not be the Amalfi Coast or Paris, but our country is full of charming, historic, beautiful places. I’m glad I have found this one.
