Retreat to your quiet place and prepare your heart and mind to allow Scripture to speak to you as you continue on your journey to joy today.
Start with Scripture. Today, read Philippians 2:25–30 from your favorite translation of the Bible or from the epigraph printed at the top of the chapter, page 97.
Paraphrase Paul’s instructions. What do you need to hear that is applicable to your life?
Read Chapter 14 of Reclaiming Joy. Today’s meditation is really Part 2, continuing yesterday’s meditation on friendship. What parts of Ella’s story, if any, do you identify with? How do your nurture your friendships?
Who are your friends? Do you need to strengthen some of those relationships?
Are you satisfied with your circle of friends, or do you long for new friends? On pages 98, 99 Ella writes that after her husband’s death, she made a list of all the single women she knew well enough to invite to her home. Who’s on your list of people you would like to know better or see more often?
Do you agree with Ella that entertaining is biblical?
Take inventory. Do you tend to wait for others to extend invitations to you, or are you proactive in reaching out to others? Are you comfortable entertaining? If not, are there other ways to be proactive, or are there baby steps that you can take in entertaining? Did you get any new ideas for building and strengthening your relationships, based on Ella’s examples of her own entertaining and the myriad ways her friends nurture friendships?
