Let those of us then who are mature be of the same mind…. Philippians 3:15a NRSV

Retreat to your quiet place and prepare your heart and mind to allow Scripture to speak to you as you continue on your journey to joy today.

Start with Scripture. Today, read Philippians 3:15, 16 from your favorite translation of the Bible or from the epigraph printed at the top of the chapter, page 133.

What is the key word or idea do you need to hear today?

The words Ella uses to name the meditation and the book chapter, believe and confidence, do not appear in Scripture. Read Chapter 19 of Reclaiming Joy. Do you see why Ella used those words? To have confidence is to believe in yourself. How does that relate to maturity? Is it essential to have self-confidence in order to be fully mature?

Ella also ignores Paul’s injunction to be of the same mind. Have previous meditations adequately focused on family unity? Is there an additional message here?

Do you identify at all with Katherine Graham or with Ella’s comparison of herself to Graham? Have you ever been in a fog of grief? What cleared the fog? How long did it take to move from emotional to analytical?

On page 136 Ella gives several examples of women who, when they sensed they were losing control of their lives, turned angry and controlling? Have you observed that? Have you experienced the difficulty of being parent to your parent? If you are the parent now, what can you learn from that?

After describing her growing self-confidence as she assumed control of Lev’s business on pages 137 and 138, Ella concludes, “As we develop confidence in our ability to meet our responsibilities with wisdom and discernment, we press on to the goal of being fully mature, accepting our circumstances and living life well.” Do you agree?

What is the lesson that you have learned today?

What can you do now to move toward joy?

What three things are you thankful for today? What moments of joy have you experienced in the last 24 hours? Take time to say, Thank you, God, for…
