[Paul wrote] I have been paid in full and have more than enough. Philippians 4:18a NRSV

Retreat to your quiet place and prepare your heart and mind to allow Scripture to speak to you as you continue on your journey to joy today.

Start with Scripture. Today, read Philippians 4:14–18a from your favorite translation of the Bible or from the epigraph printed at the top of the chapter, page 191.

What is the message you need to hear today?

Do you have more than enough? Are you satisfied with what you have? What do you consider “enough”? Have you ever turned down an offer of assistance because you have enough? Has someone you do business with refused to take full payment because you have already paid enough?

Read Chapter 27 of Reclaiming Joy. What parts of Ella’s story, if any, do you identify with?

Ella describes what she considers an abundant life on page 191. Do you agree with her?

On the next two pages she describes a few of her most thoughtful friends and the steps she took to be more thoughtful. She states that thoughtfulness as the key to enjoying an abundant life. Who are your most thoughtful friends? How do you rate yourself?

Ella refers to attributes that we have studied previously: gratitude, courage, unselfishness, friendship, hospitality and strength. What do you need to focus on to enjoy an abundant life?

What is the lesson that you have learned today?

What can you do now to move toward joy?

Ella quotes Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, on pages 195, 196. Sandberg writes, “Finding gratitude and appreciation is key to resilience. People who take the time to list things they are grateful for are happier and healthier.” This is why Ella asks readers to list what they are thankful for every day—to acquire the discipline, along with the habit, of finding joy and expressing gratitude every day.

What three things are you thankful for today? What moments of joy have you experienced in the last 24 hours? Take time to say, Thank you, God, for…
