 Retreat to your quiet place and prepare your heart and mind to allow Scripture to speak to you as you continue on your journey to joy today.

Start with Scripture. Today, read Philippians 1:27–30 from your favorite translation of the Bible or from the epigraph printed at the top of the chapter, page 43.

What is the key word or idea do you need to hear today? Why is unity important?

Read Chapter 7 of Reclaiming Joy. What parts of Ella’s story, if any, do you identify with?

When hardships, setbacks and loss occur, most expect the family to draw closer in loving support for one another; but in fact, crises often divide families. Take inventory of your family relationships. What steps can you take to improve them? What do you need to turn over to God?

Ella discovered that her husband’s estate planning had focused on tax saving for future generations. There had been no discussion of what her responsibilities would be as a widow, no preview of what it would mean to be a fiduciary with legal requires in administering the estate.

Do you have a will? Do you know what it says? When is the last time you (and your husband, if you are married) read your will and other estate-planning documents?

When is the last time you met with your attorney, accountant and financial advisors? If you are married, do you know what your situation will be in the event of death or divorce?

On page 47 Ella writes that she told her attorney that ease of administration and elimination of every possible conflict within the family after my death are more important than lowering taxes.

Since Reclaiming Joy was published, professional advisors have reacted with surprise to this statement, some admitting that they have never discussed family unity and ease of administration with their clients. Do you need to have this conversation with your advisors?
