Day 8: On Your Journey to Easter Joy, Be an Encourager

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Philippians 2:1, 2 NRSV

 Retreat to your quiet place and prepare your heart and mind to allow Scripture to speak to you as you continue on your journey to joy today.

Start with Scripture. Today, read Philippians 2:1, 2 from your favorite translation of the Bible or from the epigraph printed at the top of the chapter on page 53. These verses are among the Hallelujah Chorus passages in Philippians. Every phrase has a key word. Which phrase speaks to you most strongly today? Why?

Read Chapter 8 of Reclaiming Joy. What parts of Ella’s story, if any, do you identify with?

Have you or a loved one experienced a time where a family crisis such as a death tore the family apart? What did you learn from that experience?

Likewise, have you experienced a time when grief or another crisis brought the family closer? What in the family dynamic made the difference?

In your mother-daughter relationship, which are you? What expectations does each of you have for yourself and for the other? Are there misunderstandings between you about your relationship and its responsibilities and obligations?

If you are a mother, remember your own mother at a similar time of life. What were her needs and what did you consider your responsibilities? Do you have any regrets?

If you do not have children, whom do you count on for support? What is special about this relationship?

Who counts on you for support? In all your relationships, are you empathetic? Would others describe you as an encourager?

Reread the keys verses. Do you need to make any changes in order to live up to Paul’s expectations and move toward joy?

What three things are you thankful for today? What moments of joy have you experienced in the last 24 hours? Take time to say, Thank you, God, for…
