Great Scott! Opera meets football at The Dallas Opera this fall, in a new work by top contemporary opera composer Jake Heggie and Corpus Christi native and playwright Terrance McNally. And if that isn’t good enough, Joyce DiDonato, regularly starring in Metropolitan Opera productions, is the diva.
Having never lived in a large city (not counting New Orleans until age 6), I seldom had the opportunity to experience great music and great museums. While Lev was the music lover in the family, there were two genres that he could not tolerate—opera and ballet—so those were never part of our travel experience. Except for one performance at the Santa Fe Opera years ago, the Met’s old Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts, which my dad listened to, were my only exposure to opera.
The Performing Arts District was not a consideration when I was in the market for a condo in Dallas after Lev died, and it was a coincidence that I ended up in a high-rise five minutes away. But because we have always supported the arts in Corpus Christi, I immediately joined the organizations supporting the Dallas opera, symphony and museums. What a good year to get involved! It was the second year for Jaap van Zweden at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the second year for the opera’s beautiful new home at the Winspear Opera House. Good seats were available because of the Great Recession. And I was hooked.
Now, the season drives my calendar and largely determines when I will be in Dallas. Friends love coming to visit for a weekend of opera, symphony and shopping—with maybe a visit to the Arboretum as well…or a drive to Fort Worth to visit the Kimbell Museum. It’s been a major part of my re-inventing myself as a widow, and the music speaks to my soul and lifts my spirits like nothing else.
I’d love to see you at “Great Scott.” Single tickets went on sale July 15. I simply need to decide whether I will go to my usual Sunday matinee performance or splurge for the opening night gala October 29, with a pre-performance dinner and an after party. The red carpet and all the bright lights and champagne are exciting, and this year should be extra-special with the world premier and DiDonato.
